Electromagnetic (EM) Line Locating in British Columbia
Electromagnetic line locating is the workhorse of utility locating: a transmitter applies or induces a signal onto a buried conductive line, and a receiver on the surface follows that signal to trace the line's route and estimate its depth — quickly and accurately, over long runs.

EM locating uses a transmitter/receiver pair to detect the electromagnetic field around an energized buried conductor — a metal pipe, cable or tracer wire. In active mode the transmitter is connected directly or induces a signal; in passive mode the receiver picks up signals already present (power, radio). It is the primary method for mapping metallic utilities before any excavation.
- A transmitter applies a signal directly (conductive), via a clamp, or by induction
- A receiver detects the resulting electromagnetic field at the surface
- The operator traces the line's path and marks it
- Signal characteristics give an estimated depth and confirm the line
- Metallic water, gas and supply lines
- Electrical and telecom cables
- Tracer-wired non-metallic mains
- Metallic drains and conduits

Excavators, civil contractors and trades use EM locating to clear a dig area of metallic services and confirm route and depth before breaking ground.

Electromagnetic (EM) Line Locating — FAQ
Active locating applies a known signal to a specific line (by direct connection, clamp or induction) so the operator can trace that exact utility. Passive locating detects ambient signals already on lines — such as power or radio re-radiation — to sweep an area for unknown conductors. Both are used together for a complete picture.
Not directly — EM needs a conductor. Plastic and other non-metallic pipe is located either by a tracer wire installed with it, by inserting a sonde or traceable rod, or by ground-penetrating radar. The locating plan combines methods based on the pipe material.
