GPR Concrete Scanning in British Columbia

Ground-penetrating radar is the core of modern concrete scanning. It images what's inside a slab or wall — rebar, post-tension cables, conduit, embeds and voids — non-destructively, from one accessible side, in real time. It's the safe, radiation-free standard before any cut, core, drill or anchor.

What GPR Concrete Scanning Covers

GPR concrete scanning sends high-frequency radar pulses into a concrete element and reads the reflections to map embedded targets and layer boundaries. Unlike X-ray, it needs access to only one side, produces results instantly, and uses no ionizing radiation — so work continues safely around it.

How It Works
  • Grid the target area and scan with the GPR antenna
  • Interpret reflections in real time on the unit
  • Mark reinforcement, embeds and clear zones
  • Confirm cover and thickness where required
What It Detects
  • Rebar and welded-wire reinforcement
  • Post-tension cables and tendons
  • Embedded conduit and pipe
  • Voids, honeycombing and slab thickness
Best For

Any scan of structural concrete before cutting, coring, drilling or anchoring.

For Pros & Contractors

Coring/cutting crews, GCs and structural trades scan before every penetration to avoid striking post-tension cables, rebar and conduit.

GPR Concrete Scanning — FAQ

Is GPR concrete scanning better than X-ray?

For most work, yes. GPR needs access to only one side of the element, gives real-time results, and uses no ionizing radiation, so surrounding work continues and no area is cleared. X-ray is reserved for the few cases needing maximum detail with two-sided access.

How deep can GPR scan into concrete?

Typical concrete scanning images the full depth of most slabs and walls to locate reinforcement, post-tension cables, conduit and voids. Penetration and resolution depend on the antenna frequency, concrete condition and moisture, which the technician selects for the element.
